Hello. My name is Christian Cashelle and I am addicted to my cell phone.
Don’t act like I’m the only one. Matter-of-fact, you have your phone in your hand right now. So don’t judge me! This is the first step in recovery. I had excuses for my social media addiction. I have a network marketing business and a publishing company that requires me to interact with people and promote my brands. I HAVE to be on my phone, right?
You may not even realize you are addicted to social media, but you are. Do me a favor, count how many times you check any social media platform today and come back and tell me. According to socialmediatoday.com, the average person spends a total of two hours on social media per day. 8 percent of your day may not seem like a lot, but think about what else you could accomplish in two hours.
Just like with unhealthy foods, your body needs a detox from social media. Here’s how:
Decide what you really need social media for. Business? Inspiration? Connections with family and friends? However you want to use it is fine, but having clear intentions will help you be more mindful after your detox. You don’t want this detox to be in vain.
So now that you have a plan for your social media usage, it’s time to cut out everything else. If you are using Facebook for motivation, unfriend and unfollow anyone who posts negativity. Complaints, foul language, anything offensive to you needs to go. Don’t invite those bad vibes back into your social media life once this detox is over. Get rid of them now so when you come back, it’ll be fresh and rewarding.
Turn off your notifications
If I have a notification I have to check it. I’m not so much worried about the actual message, I just have to make the notification go away. If you are like me and have multiple pages and platforms, then you have a lot of notifications. Turning them off is like “out of sight, out of mind.” If someone needs you bad enough, they’ll contact you the old fashion way: a call or a text LOL.
Set time limits
You can’t go cold turkey? It’s okay. Just designate a time for you to check all of your social media pages. Or times when you can’t. Whatever works for you.
Fast and pray
I’m not kidding. I often give up social media in addition to other things and food when I am fasting. You won’t believe how much time you have to do important things like personal development, meditation, exercise, sleep. LOL. There are so many things you can do to occupy that social media time that are productive and beneficial to your life. It may be hard at first, but giving Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat (my fav three) a break will be great for you in so many ways.
