To whom it may concern.

Below is a poem that I wrote for Women’s Day a few years ago. I felt the need to share this today so hopefully it reaches who it needs to.

Dear girl

Dear girl near me, dear girl far, dear girl in my mind, dear girl in my heart

Dear black girl, white girl, mixed girl, thin girl, thick girl

Dear happy girl, hurt girl, mad girl, depressed girl

Dear protected girl, dear molested girl

Dear smart girl, party girl, stressed girl, numb girl

Dear religious girl, sinner girl, lost girl, found girl

Dear sweet little baby angel girl, dear girl who grew up still facing her demons

This is my love letter to you

I want you to know that you are deserving of this

Because often times you are absent from the presence of love that comes when nothing is required of you

A love you don’t have to do anything for, but be

a woman in all of your glory, you are misused the most

your emotions are manipulated to turn you into super girl, fixing everyone’s issues while dishing out your own essence and wishing for refills

yet they come and they take

pretending to love you only enough to enslave

this love letter is to inform you of what they see

that magic that lies deep within you that can conquer it all and get things done

they know that capturing your attention, appealing to your need for love, can cure all of their troubles

Because when you feel love, they know you will give the very last of you to keep them afloat

when your head is barely above water, you push them up with only hopes of mutual affection

this love letter is for you

because you deserve some love…just because
